UAE Classrooms Reopen After a Week of War

Education systems are often judged by exam scores, fees, or rankings. In moments of crisis, something else matters more: whether they can switch modes quickly without losing public trust. The UAE has now had to pass that test twice. The first round of remote learning began on 2 March, when Iran launched its opening wave of attacks.

Schools reopened in stages from 20 April, then closed again on 4 May after UAE air defences intercepted 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones in a single night. Since the war began on 28 February, the country’s air defences have intercepted a total of 537 ballistic missiles, 26 cruise missiles, and 2,256 drones.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that all public and private nurseries, kindergartens, and schools would resume face-to-face teaching, with private schools still permitted to use hybrid rotational models where needed. GCSE and A-level exams have been cancelled entirely for this academic year, with schools moving to portfolios, coursework submissions, and teacher-predicted grades to ensure pupils receive results that reflect their work.

Safety Comes Before Routine

The decision to move classes online was not symbolic. Authorities temporarily closed nurseries, schools, and universities nationwide after Iranian missiles and drones were intercepted, prioritising safety while ensuring uninterrupted education. School leaders said contingency plans were activated almost immediately, with campuses ready to pivot back online within hours. Funke Baffour-Awuah, corporate head of well-being for Gems Education, one of the UAE’s leading private school groups, said staff were able to respond with “speed and care.” “There is no version without disruption,” she added.

Parents have also had to adjust. Earlier in April, authorities suspended school bus operations for the first week of reopening, forcing families to manage drop-offs themselves while safety procedures were reviewed. This time, buses resumed alongside classrooms. Zeina Abdalla, a mother of three children aged seven, nine, and eleven, told The National that the quick decision-making was reassuring. “I’d rather have them home where I know they’re safe,” she said. “Schools have been very quick to get kids back on track.”

Remote Learning Is No Longer Exceptional

One reason the UAE has managed these shifts relatively smoothly is that distance learning is no longer an alien model. The country built digital habits during the pandemic, then adapted them again during the Iran war. Some parents even opened their homes as informal satellite nurseries so small groups of children could continue learning under teacher supervision during closures. That kind of workaround says something important about the education culture taking shape.

Remote schooling is no longer framed only as an emergency patch. It is becoming part of a wider resilience toolkit, alongside safe zones, evacuation drills, and hybrid timetables. There is still a cost. Distance learning can keep lessons moving, but it cannot fully replace routine, peer contact, or the social side of school life. That remains true even when the digital switch works well. The cancellation of international exams is the starkest reminder that some disruption cannot be managed away by technology alone.

A Country Practises Continuity

The return to classrooms carries more meaning than a normal reopening. It signals that the UAE wants public life to look steady again, even while the wider region remains unstable. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said students had resumed in-person learning after the country’s education system demonstrated “exceptional resilience.”

Aisha Miran, director general of Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority, placed safety at the heart of all decisions. “Whether we continue with in-person lessons or move back to distance learning, it will take into account the safety and well-being of students and staff,” she said. “This is part of our training and the sector’s resilience.

The reopening does not mean the danger has disappeared. It means the country is trying to preserve rhythm under pressure. In the UAE, education has started to look less like a routine public service than a test of how normality is maintained when the region refuses to stay normal.
