In recent weeks, the international community has witnessed significant changes in European security policy, prompted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements on Ukraine and the role of NATO.

These statements have provoked intense debate among European leaders and led to a review of defense spending in several countries.

Increased Defense Spending in Europe

Denmark was one of the first countries to respond to calls for increased defense capability.

The Danish government announced a special $7 billion fund to accelerate the modernisation of the armed forces. This decision was made against the backdrop of a growing threat from Russia and concerns about a possible weakening of support from the United States.

The United Kingdom also announced plans to increase its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP. This decision reflects London’s desire to strengthen its military capabilities and demonstrate its commitment to Europe’s collective security.

The British Prime Minister noted that in the changing geopolitical environment, it is necessary to invest in defense to protect national interests and maintain stability in the region.

The U.S. Position & Withdrawal of Troops from the Baltics

President Trump’s statements about the possible withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Baltic states have caused concern among European allies. Such steps could leave the European Union vulnerable to potential threats.

European officials express fears that reducing the U.S. military presence in the region could undermine stability and security on NATO’s eastern flank.

In Lithuania, for instance, officials say there are no signs yet that the U.S. is preparing to withdraw troops.

However, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth noted that NATO allies cannot consider the presence of American forces in Europe to be permanent, emphasising the need for European countries to strengthen their own defense capabilities.

European Leaders React and Strengthen Co-operation

European leaders held emergency meetings to discuss the current situation. French President Emmanuel Macron initiated talks with the heads of Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands, as well as the leadership of the European Commission and NATO.

The main topic of discussion was defense spending and support for Ukraine in the context of a possible change in U.S.  policy.

Türkiye’s Role in the New Security Architecture

With the possible reduction of the American presence in Europe, the importance of Türkiye’s defense potential is growing. Experts note that the aloof approach of the United States to European affairs will highlight the importance of Türkiye as a key country in ensuring the continent’s security.

Ankara, with its significant military capabilities and strategic location, can take on a more active role in regional defense and stabilisation.

Trump’s comments have had a significant impact on European defense strategies. Increased military spending and potential changes in the U.S. presence underscore Europe’s determination to strengthen its own security.

This evolving scenario is likely to change transatlantic relations, prompting NATO and the EU to further strengthen collective defense measures in an uncertain geopolitical climate.
