You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat it, Meghan

The latest bustup in the British royal family once again reopens old wounds around the Sussexes’; specifically Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

The reason for this was an unexpected: in official documents and communications related to her recent initiatives, the use of the title “Her Royal Highness” was recorded, despite the fact that after Meghan and Prince Harry stepped down from royal duties in 2020, the couple voluntarily agreed not to use this title in the public sphere.

2020 Agreement: Voluntary Renunciation of the Title

Such a move was a part of the agreements under the late Queen Elizabeth II.

It aimed at reducing the conflict between the couple and the rest of the monarchy.

Stopping the use of the title was considered a kind of compromise: the status formally retained, yet discounted in any official duties.

HRH Back in Circulation: Coincidence or Strategy?

However, recent mentions of HRH in press releases, presentations, and at charity events, attended by the Duchess, continues to stir a strong reaction across the British press and monarchists.

Many regard this as a violation of the previous agreement, with some calling it a deliberate provocation on the part of Mrs Markle.

Silent Disenchantment, Buckingham Palace

The Royal Household, has refrained from making any official comments.

However, sources close to Buckingham Palace have expressed “deep confusion” and “disappointment” over the incident.

The media has speculated that this use of the title may be an attempt to emphasise the “legitimacy” of Meghan’s projects on the international stage, especially in the United States.

Legal Status of the Title

Legally, the title “Her Royal Highness” is still assigned to Meghan.

It has not been formally revoked, as is the case when a title is stripped by a decision of the monarch or parliament.

However, protocol and their open embrace, as ‘private individuals‘ in California, contradicts the use of royal credentials.

Open Wounds

This incident, once again, intensifies criticism surrounding the couple and their disgraced actions against the British monarchy.

Some believe that the couple, especially Meghan, seeks to maintain status and attention despite giving up official functions.

Others believe the reaction to the formality of the title is a distraction from the real issues the Duke and Duchess are dealing with.

Recent issues surround Prince Harry’s decision to give a official BBC interview where he openly criticised his father, King Charles, in a stinging rebuke that touched on the King’s ongoing treatment of cancer.

Security protection was rejected in 2020, after a stinging legal battle, fought by the Prince in UK courts. Yet, the Prince continues to fight for a private security detail despite the legal case.

The HRH row ignites further divisions between the Royal Household and the couple, as divisions widen, and any return to the UK seems a distant memory.
