Türkiye is building a launch pad in Somalia, boosting both its space ambitions and geopolitical influence.
Türkiye has embarked on an ambitious project by starting the construction of a rocket launch facility in Somalia. Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed this major development, which represents a key step in Türkiye’s quest to cement its position in the global space race.
The chosen site, located at the eastern tip of Africa, offers an ideal launch location due to its proximity to the equator, boosting the efficiency and range of rocket launches.
Economic and Geopolitical Benefits
President Mohamud highlighted the numerous benefits of this project, stating, “I personally believe that the importance of Somalia hosting a launchpad for Turkish satellites is even more significant than the billions of dollars and opportunities that the project will generate”. The facility will generate jobs and revenue, aiding Somalia’s recovery from decades of conflict. This collaboration also strengthens Türkiye’s geopolitical influence in Africa, aligning with its broader strategy of deepening ties with the continent.

Impact of Regional Crises
The Somaliland crisis and Jubaland crisis have notably affected the region’s stability. Clashes between clan militias and government forces, primarily centered around the northern city of Las Anod, have threatened Somaliland’s peace and stability. This crisis has delayed presidential elections and intensified communal tensions.
Similarly, the Jubaland crisis stems from a constitutional dispute between the Somali Federal Government and Jubaland, following the re-election of Ahmed Madobe as Jubaland’s president. Ethiopian forces have supported Jubaland, while the Somali Armed Forces have been involved on the other side.
Turkish Mediation in Regional Conflicts
Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan mediated a deal between the Federal Government of Somalia and Ethiopia to de-escalate tensions. This agreement aims to ensure Ethiopia’s access to the sea while respecting Somalia’s territorial integrity, marking a crucial step towards peace and cooperation in the region.
Advancing Türkiye’s Space Ambitions
The Somali launch pad serves as a pivotal element in Türkiye’s 10-year space roadmap, which includes missions to the moon and the development of satellite technologies. This facility will greatly enhance Türkiye’s ability to undertake advanced space missions, propelling it into the ranks of global space-faring nations.
Regional Stability and Development
Over the past decade, Türkiye has invested in various sectors in Somalia, from defence cooperation and infrastructure projects to hydrocarbon exploration. These investments have played a crucial role in fostering regional stability and development. The construction of the space launch facility is the latest addition to Türkiye’s efforts to support Somalia’s growth while advancing its own technological capabilities.
Türkiye’s Technological Footprint
This project is part of a broader strategy to enhance Türkiye’s technological footprint. The launch facility will serve as a hub for developing and testing new rocket and satellite technologies. Türkiye’s focus on space exploration and technology aligns with its goals of achieving self-reliance in high-tech industries and reducing dependency on foreign technologies.
