Russia and the United States: A Détente for Now

Relations between the United States and Russia continue to shift and reach a delicate détente in the past weeks, if not days, as Trump’s presidency makes headlines.

Such changes are taking place against a backdrop of great power nationalism, with key countries such as the United States, China, Russia, and Türkiye seeking to strengthen their positions in a evolving world order.

Changes in Foreign Policy

With the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, there has been a significant shift in American foreign policy.

The Trump administration adopted a course of rapprochement with Russia, following the U.S.’s spat with Ukraine, which has resulted in a number of policy shifts:

  • Suspension of Military Aid to Ukraine: President Trump decided to stop military aid and intelligence cooperation with Ukraine.
  • Sanctions Policy Review: The administration is reportedly considering lifting some sanctions on Russia.
  • Diplomatic Cooperation: Russian and American diplomats met in Türkiye, following Riyadh, to discuss the functioning of their embassies in Moscow and Washington, indicating a desire on both sides to improve diplomatic and economic ties.

Russia on the World Stage

Moscow welcomes changes in U.S. foreign policy, emphasising the similarity of positions on a number of international issues.

Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that Washington’s approach largely coincides with Russia’s foreign policy outlook.

At the same time, Russia is actively expanding its diplomatic presence not only in Europe, but also in Africa whilst attempts to salvage its influence in Syria are evolving.

The Return of Nationalism Than Internationalism

The United States, China, Russia, and Türkiye are actively promoting their national interests instead of international issues

  • China: Continues to expand its economic and political presence in various regions of the world, challenging traditional Western dominance.
  • Türkeye: Strengthens its role in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean, demonstrating an independent foreign policy.
  • Russia: Actively participates on issues, that include the Global South, as it seeks to restore it’s status as a great power during the Soviet era.

The Future of Diplomacy: Multipolarism

The decline of the liberal world order is accompanied by a resurgence of multipolarity, with the U.S. and Russia redefining their interactions, with all (non-)state actors.

International organisations such as the UN, G20, and BRICS play a key role in conflict resolution yet U.S. unilateralism and Russia’s preference for institutions, tied to the Global South, shift the theatres of diplomacy.

The changing dynamics of the U.S.-Russia relationship highlight the shift to another level.

The U.S. and atypical blocs, such as the G20 and BRICS, will play a vital role in this future order.
