In early March 2025, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk expressed support for the idea of the United States withdrawing from NATO and the UN.

In response to a post by social media user X calling for withdrawal from these international organizations, Musk responded succinctly: “I agree.”

Musk’s Statements, No Coincidence

Such statements coincide with the initiatives of some American politicians.

Republican Senator Mike Lee introduced a bill to withdraw the United States from the UN, arguing that the organisation does not advance the interests of the country and does not correspond to the principle of “America first.”

In addition, Musk proposed the possibility of leaving NATO after the Norwegian company Haltbakk Bunkers announced that it would stop refueling U.S. Navy ships in protest against the actions of President Trump.

Previously, President Donald Trump and Elon Musk expressed frustration with the lack of contributions from NATO allies and the ineffectiveness of the UN.

In 2024, Congress approved a $1.54 billion budget to fund the UN; Trump and Musk say UN funding is an excessive burden on the United States.

Musk’s Scepticism on IGOs

Musk previously criticised these organisations for being ineffective and placing an excessive financial burden on the United States.

His position reflects his belief that international structures are outdated and hinder the free market.

In the past, Musk consistently advocated for minimising government intervention and supporting a market economy. His views on global politics and economics are combined with criticism of international organisations, which he believes hinder innovation and free competition.

Hypothetical: Consequences of UN Withdrawal

Any potential U.S. withdrawal from the UN will significantly weaken its diplomatic influence, especially in matters of sanctions, climate policy, and peacekeeping missions. Without American funding, the organisation will face budget cuts, which will affect humanitarian and environmental programs.

Therefore, China, Russia or the EU may try to exploit vacant leadership, promoting their interests on the global stage. This may lead to a change in the balance of power in international politics.

International Reaction: ‘America First

The statement has raised concerns among world leaders and U.S. allies.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to improve relations with U.S. President Donald Trump in light of heightened geopolitical tensions.

Many politicians and experts have expressed concerns that such statements could undermine global stability as Europe firmly sides with Ukraine despite emphasising the importance of U.S. inclusion on any Ukraine settlement.

Ramifications of U.S. Withdrawal: European Integration

Any withdrawal would be significant for the alliance since NATO revolves around the Transatlantic bridge. Such a hypothetical would likely lead to greater European integration on defence, in lockstep with the UK, as a third party.

In doing so, any U.S. withdrawal from NATO and the UN could lead to major changes in the balance of power amidst a weakening of international institutions.

Although similar initiatives have failed to lead to real withdrawals in the past; the current political environment could materialise with the U.S. stepping back from it’s European allies.
