In response to changing geopolitical realities and mounting pressure from Russia, NATO has redefined its strategy in Eastern Europe, focusing on strengthening its defense capabilities.

Main Aspects of New NATO Defence Strategy:

  • Strengthening military presence: NATO is increasing its troop levels in Eastern Europe to ensure a rapid response to potential threats. This includes permanently stationing battalion groups in the Baltics and Poland. These measures are intended to demonstrate its readiness to defend every ally.

  • Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP): Under the eFP program, launched in 2016, NATO has deployed multinational battalion groups to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. These forces serve as a deterrent against potential aggression and build trust among allies.

  • Large-scale military exercises: NATO conducts large exercises such as Steadfast Defender 2024, which involve tens of thousands of troops. These maneuvers demonstrate the alliance’s ability to quickly deploy forces and bolster defenses on its eastern flank.

  • Integration of Ukraine: NATO’s new military strategy emphasises the importance of Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance. It is seen as a key element in ensuring stability and security in Europe. NATO supports Ukraine in restoring its territorial integrity and protecting its national sovereignty.

  • Adaptation of the Strategic Concept: At the Madrid Summit in 2022, NATO updated its Strategic Concept, recognising Russia as the main security threat. This reflects the changed risk assessment and the need to adapt to the new security environment.

NATO Enlargement

NATO is actively strengthening its partnerships with Eastern European countries such as Sweden and Finland, enhancing security in the region.

The Alliance’s eastward expansion has become an important element of the strategic response to threats from Russia. Sweden and Finland, traditionally neutral, are now seen as key partners, giving them access to NATO’s collective security.

Their accession to the Alliance will improve the defense capability of the entire region.

NATO & China

NATO’s new strategy takes into account China’s growing role in Eastern Europe and its impact on global security.

With China’s growing presence across the global economy and on technology, the alliance is focusing on strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure and preventing possible cyber threats.

China is actively expanding its investments and cooperation in countries such as Serbia and Greece, which is raising concern across NATO.

NATO’s shift on defence aims to strengthen European security amidst Russia and China’s growing security and technological influence on European borders.

Therefore, NATO’s new strategy in Eastern Europe strengthens defense capabilities whilst adpating to China’s growing influence in the region.
