Greenland’s ruling party, Siumut, announced its intention to hold a independence referendum for the island.

Party chairman Erik Jensen has stressed that this will be a priority after the parliamentary elections scheduled for 11 March, 2025.

Jensen stressed the importance of working closely with the people of Greenland in the process, saying: "There is no doubt about what we will vote for."

Trump’s Interest in Greenland (c2019)

The debate over Greenland’s independence intensified after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to purchase the island.

Trump first floated the idea in 2019, but Danish authorities refused to discuss the matter.

In December 2024, Trump raised the issue again saying that control over Greenland is important for "freedom throughout the world."

Danish authorities refuted Trump’s claims: “the island is not for sale”.

Danish Relations with Greenland

Greenland, as an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark, enjoys a significant degree of self-government. However, defense, foreign policy, and the financial system remain under the jurisdiction of Copenhagen.

Therefore, the desire for full independence is linked to the desire of Greenlanders to independently manage their natural resources and determine the future of the island.

International Exploration of the Arctic:

The international community is closely monitoring developments in Greenland.

If the island chooses indepenence, it could change the geopolitical balance in the Arctic: a region rich in natural resources and of strategic importance.

Greenland: U.S. , China, and Russia in the Arctic

The United States, China, and Russia all share a strategic interest in the island because of its strategic military maritime access and the high proportion of natural raw materials.

Therefore, the island’s possible independence could open the door to a increase in the number of military bases for NATO and other US allies. Already, the U.S. has Thule Air Base in northwestern Greenland.

Independence for Greenland

Trump’s intervention on Greenland continues to accelerate demands for independence even if Greenlanders wish to chart their own future without Danish or perhaps American sovereignty.

Either way, Greenlanders will see renewed investment should Greenland chart it’s own path on independence.
