In his recent speech to the U.S. Congress, President Donald Trump addressed several key themes that outline his administration’s domestic and foreign policy directions. Here are five key takeaways from his speech.

Ukraine Conflict

President Trump emphasised the United States’ continued commitment to achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. He stressed the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts to end the fighting and restore stability in the region.

As such, Trump emphasised that the United States will work closely with international partners while engaging in dialogue with both Ukraine and Russia to ensure a lasting peace. This reflects his administration’s focus on preventing further escalation and promoting long-term cooperation.

Ambitious Infrastructure Projects

Trump announced plans to expand the Panama Canal, enhancing the U.S.’s strategic role on maritime trade. Trump also noted that talks are underway to acquire Greenland, emphasising the importance of the U.S. position in the Arctic region.

Control of the National Debt

Trump has promised to balance the federal budget and reduce the national debt. His beliefs rely on hiring qualified professionals to maximise financial efficiency.

The President emphasised the importance of government spending, making programs more efficient, and therefore freeing up resources for capital investment.

Tightening Trade Policy

On trade, Trump announced his readiness to tighten trade policy by introducing new tariffs on imported goods. This step is aimed at protecting the American economy and stimulating domestic production.

The president emphasised that in this way the United States will be able to reduce dependence on foreign supplies, create additional jobs and strengthen its industry, while maintaining long-term economic stability.

Immigration Changes

Trump also proposed a “gold card” program that would grant foreign investors the opportunity to obtain American citizenship for an investment of $5 million.

In turn, Trump’s policies aim at attracting capital to the United States. According to the president, his policies will stimulate economic growth, create new jobs, whilst strengthening the country’s financial system by attracting highly skilled professionals and entrepreneurs.

Trump presented ambitious plans to strengthen America around his doctrine: business.

Whether his reforms will bring about global peace and domestic security are yet to be proven.
