Denmark announced a £1.2 billion defence package for Greenland hours after Donald Trump repeated his desire to acquire the Arctic territory. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen unveiled plans for new inspection ships, drones, and military upgrades, calling it time to boost Arctic presence.

The package set the stage for a symbolic statement of sovereignty. King Frederik unveiled a new coat of arms giving greater prominence to Greenland. The redesign features an enlarged polar bear representing the territory.

Trump Camp Courts Support in Greenland

The move came as Trump declared ownership of Greenland “an absolute necessity” for US security. His son Donald Trump Jr travelled to the territory Tuesday, though Greenlandic officials confirmed no government meetings were planned.

Trump claimed Greenlanders support joining the US, writing “the people of Greenland are MAGA” on Truth Social. Tesla CEO Elon Musk backed Trump’s push, stating without evidence that Greenlanders “want to be part of America”.

Linking it to US plans for Panama Canal control, Trump refused to rule out using military force to acquire Greenland. When asked about avoiding coercion, Trump said “I can’t assure you” regarding either territory.

Greenland Leaders Push for Independence Path

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede pushed back against both US and Danish control. In his New Year address, Egede called for independence from Denmark’s “shackles of colonialism” while maintaining that Greenland “is not for sale and will never be for sale”.

Egede’s independence push builds on growing tensions with Denmark over historical wrongs. The movement gained momentum after revelations of Danish misconduct, including a forced contraception campaign in the 1960s and 1970s.

The prime minister suggested holding an independence referendum alongside parliamentary elections in April, stating that work has begun on creating the framework for Greenland as an independent state. However, the territory still relies on annual Danish subsidies worth €500 million, presenting a financial hurdle to full independence.

Global Powers Eye Strategic Arctic Region

The renewed US interest stems from Greenland’s mineral wealth and Arctic shipping routes opening due to melting ice. The territory holds deposits of rare earth elements needed for electronics and defence manufacturing, which the US currently sources mainly from China.

The diplomatic tension highlights the Arctic’s growing role in global politics. As climate change opens new shipping lanes and resource deposits, China and Russia have increased their regional presence. The US maintains the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, which Trump called central to American defence strategy.

While Denmark bolsters its Arctic defence and Trump plots acquisition, Greenland’s 57,000 residents face mounting pressure from competing powers seeking control of their homeland’s resources and location. The territory’s push for self-determination continues amid the geopolitical manoeuvring.
