What are Ghost Villages?

A ghost village is a once-thriving community that its residents have abandoned. These villages were left to the elements, and nature slowly reclaimed the land and structures, creating a haunting yet beautiful scene of urban decay.

A large degree of interest spans the Mediterranean region: Portugal, Spain and Italy! Considering their richness in nature and the demand for tourism, it is a hotspot for investment. Such places in these Mediterranean states include:

D’Angelo, a retired banker, and a group of locals acquired around 60 abandoned stone houses in San Severino di Centola 15 years ago. They were motivated by a deep love for the area and a desire to protect it from being overrun by investors seeking to change its character drastically. The village, once home to farmer and shepherd families, had been deserted after harsh living conditions FORCED residents to relocate in the 1800s. 

D’Angelo and his group aimed to preserve the village’s original beauty without turning it into a commercial resort. The group has faced challenges with bureaucracy and limited resources but are determined to protect the town. San Severino di Centola, now open to visitors, attracts thousands of tourists annually who come to explore its historical ruins and natural beauty. While plans for significant renovations are still pending, D’Angelo hopes to find eco-conscious investors to help sustainably restore the village, keeping its unique charm intact.

This narrative illustrates the importance of supporting efforts to preserve these towns. The goal is not entirely transforming them but honouring their history while safeguarding their natural beauty and unique character.

Investing in these areas offers a significant opportunity for visitors who want to explore their historical significance without turning them into luxurious resorts that diminish their heritage.
