Artificial intelligence has surpassed all human expectations and today finds application in almost every walk of life. The film industry is no exception; American studios are actively experimenting with neural networks to produce films at rapid pace, in turn, opening up new projects for creativity and commercial success.
Smart Scripts: Analysis
ScriptBook has unveiled an updated AI-powered algorithm that can analyse movie scripts and predict their potential success. The company has created a tool that analyses the text of scripts and provides a financial forecast.
How does ScriptBook work in practise? Step one, the script is uploaded to the system in PDF format and then the algorithm provides a detailed analysis of the project.
The software predicts the film’s age rating, analyses the characters in detail, identifies the protagonists and antagonists, evaluates the emotional background of each of them, predicts the target audience based on criteria such as gender and ethnicity, and also gives a rough estimate of potential box office receipts.
Hollywood: New Developments in AI
Hollywood is now experimenting with innovative technologies such as AI-powered face swaps: deepfake-style character enhancements, automatic background, location, or country generation in real time are all on the table. These innovations make visual effects realistic and production more efficient.
New Era of Storytelling
One of the most striking examples is the film «Furious 7», where AI helped bring Brian O’Connor, the character played by the late Paul Walker, back to the screen. After the tragic death of the actor, the filmmakers used a combination of CGI and neural networks to recreate his appearance.
To achieve maximum authenticity, they invited Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, and actor John Brotherton who performed scenes instead of Paul. AI analysed archival recordings of Walker’s performances to reproduce his facial expressions, gestures, and manner of speech. And audio fragments from his previous roles were used to create dialogue.
This technology not only made it possible to complete work on the film, but also became a way to preserve the memory of Paul Walker, demonstrating how AI can change the future of filmmaking and the approach to character creation.
AI: No Answer to Creativity
AI, however, lacks creativity and originality. Since AI relies heavily on algorithms and data-driven ideas, it often leads to repetitive and formulaic results. This is problematic in storytelling and screenwriting, where generating unique ideas is crucial, for engagement purposes. Over-reliance on AI can hinder the creative process, leading to monotony in storytelling and a reduction in diverse perspectives.
AI in the film industry will sure create an exciting future although there remain unique challenges that come with computerised solutions in filmmaking.
