A Love Hate Relationship: Bratislava and Kyiv

Relations between Slovakia and Ukraine are historically positive, with both countries providing assistance and support to each other. However, in recent years, diplomatic ties have deteriorated, leading to tensions between the two countries.

Common History

Following the collapse of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Slovakia and Ukraine established diplomatic relations. Since then, cooperation between the countries developed in various areas, including economics, culture, and politics.

Slovakia supported Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration and provided humanitarian aid during difficult periods.

Why the Deterioration in Relations?

In recent years, relations between Slovakia and Ukraine have deteriorated for several reasons. Political differences became particularly acute after Prime Minister Robert Fico came to power in Slovakia in 2024, criticising Ukraine for its actions against Slovakia and calling President Volodymyr Zelensky an “enemy” of the country.

Economic issues also played a role in the tensions: Slovakia expressed dissatisfaction with Ukraine’s termination of Russian gas supplies, where Ukraine is a key transit route for Russian gas, and decided to move closer to Moscow.

Slovakia’s interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs also caused a diplomatic conflict, exacerbating the already existing problems in bilateral relations.

Tit-for-Tat

The deterioration of relations between Slovakia and Ukraine has led to diplomatic scandals and mutual accusations. Slovakia summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to Bratislava and protested against statements by the Ukrainian side, which were regarded as interference in Slovakia’s internal affairs.

In response, Ukraine expressed concern about Fico’s anti-Ukrainian statements and called for the restoration of constructive dialogue between the countries.

Prospects for Restoring Relations

To restore normal relations between Slovakia and Ukraine, it is necessary to overcome existing differences and establish a dialogue based on mutual respect and consideration of the interests of both parties.

An essential step could be holding bilateral negotiations aimed at resolving contentious issues and strengthening cooperation in various areas.

Ukrainian Accession to the European Union

Ukraine is actively working to improve its economy, but successful integration requires increasing the level of legal and economic sustainability. An important aspect is the fight against corruption, strengthening democratic institutions, and compliance with European standards.

Externally, Ukraine faces Russia, which also affects its relations with the EU. Despite these challenges, the country is moving towards meeting the conditions for accession, which strengthens its chances for full EU membership in the future.

Diplomatic relations between Slovakia and Ukraine continue to deteriorate due to political, economic and internal conflicts. Despite the current difficulties, the restoration of constructive dialogue and strengthening of cooperation are possible if mutual respect is followed.

Cooperation between the countries remains important for the stability and development of Central and Eastern Europe.
