In recent days, the world’s attention has focused on the health of Pope Francis.

On 14 February, 2025, the 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital with a respiratory infection. Doctors later diagnosed him with double pneumonia, raising concerns about the future of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis’s Current Health Status

According to official statements from the Vatican, Pope Francis remains in good spirits and continues to perform light administrative duties from his hospital room.

However, doctors note that the polymicrobial respiratory infection complicates treatment and requires a longer hospital stay.

The Vatican Church Going Forward

Pope Francis’s declining health raises questions about possible changes in the leadership of the Catholic Church.

  • Resignation of the Pope: While it is rare for a pope to resign, there are precedents. In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI voluntarily stepped down due to health reasons. If Pope Francis decides to follow suit, it would trigger a conclave to elect a new pontiff.
  • Appointment of a coadjutor: The pope may appoint a coadjutor bishop with right of succession, who will assume some of his responsibilities and succeed him in the event of his resignation or death.
  • Continuation of office: If the pope’s health improves, he may continue to exercise his functions, perhaps with some responsibilities being redistributed among cardinals and bishops.

Possible Successors

Possible candidates include:

  • Cardinal Pietro Parolin: The Vatican’s Secretary of State, known for his diplomatic experience and closeness to the current church leadership.
  • Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle: A Filipino cardinal, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, who represents the “global south” and has charisma.
  • Cardinal Peter Erdo: A Hungarian cardinal known for his conservative approach and experience in managing church structures.

Future Impact of the Catholic Church

Pope Francis’ health already has a significant impact on the future of the Catholic Church. His reforms aimed at modernising and strengthening the social role of the Church raise questions on succession and the direction of travel following their appointment.

At the same time, there are disagreements within the Catholic Church between conservatives and progressives. Any change in leadership could either exacerbate these contradictions or help resolve them.

The Pope’s Fight on Corruption & Social Liberty

Pope Francis has carried out sweeping reforms to the management of the Vatican’s finances, tightening control over the Holy See’s banking operations and cracking down on corruption.

He has also changed the Catholic Church’s approach to modern social issues, softening its rhetoric on the LGBT+ community, advocating for a greater role for women in the church, and being flexible on marriage and divorce.

These changes have drawn both support and criticism from within the Catholic community.

Pope Francis’ illness will force tough conversations on succession and whether the Catholic Church will continue or divert from Francis’ leadership on reform.
