In the second part of this four part episode, DET Podcast Presenter Mariem Dekhili discusses the art of comedy with award winning Comedian, Artiste, and Broadway Dancer: Mina Liccione. Dekhili discusses the reasons behind joining comedy.
Why be a Comedian?
Comedian, Artiste, Dancer, Mina Liccione: Pain plus time equals comedy; that’s the formula.
So something that really hurt a few months ago, like alhamdulilah, I am very happily married but if I went through a divorce that would be very painful at the time.
At the time that is very painful and if I write jokes about it, it is not going to be funny but it is probaly going to be angry.
Comedy as Therapy
Right, but in time I might start writing jokes about different points of view and different things that happen.
When you can write jokes about something, that was very painful, that means you have in turn healed.
When the audience laughs, the person way in the back laughing the hardest, I know he or she went through the same thing.
In turn, you are helping them heal because you are talking about it.
Breast Cancer Awareness
For a long time I have been doing shows for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Absolutely, we talk about health and breast cancer.
We talk about personal stories and in the audience you can tell and feel the laughter in different ways.
After the show, without fail, I get messages from the audience saying:
"Thank you so much for telling me that I had to go get tested. I did take my mum because I made a promise to you and we did find something, but we caught it in time."
Elevating the Meaning of Comedy
Alhamdulilah, exactly what an amazing thing to be able to do. It is a much higher purpose and meaning for the art.
